Lt (N) Frederik Genest, a MARS officer, has been the 1 Squadron Commander for just under a year. Originally from Quebec, Genest was last posted to Halifax, NS.
As an ex-cadet from the class of 2009, Genest believes that he brings something unique to the job with experiences that not every squadron commander possesses. While at RMC, Genest studied French Studies and History.
“I loved watching the obstacle course and seeing all of the cadets working together. It brought back memories of being there myself.” Genest says that it is really weird to come back after eight years. He is glad that he’s able to understand how the college works and how the cadets will feel about certain things. When things come down from people who haven’t been through the college, Genest believes that he’s able to shield his squadron from it a bit, or at least decide how to best apply it.
“It’s a really different experience. Really cool to be back here like this.”
Although he does want to get back to the fleet soon, Genest would definitely love the opportunity to come back to the college again one day.
To Genest, it is very important to find a life/work balance. He urges all of the cadets and recent grads to find hobbies and friends outside of the military. He says that it will help to make you a better-rounded person.
