CLASS OF 1972

Hi, guys.

Guess what, it’s Reunion time again. It’s forty years since we graduated and our next reunion is just around the corner.

In 2012, Ex-Cadet Weekend is the weekend of September 28-30. In addition to the usual Ex-Cadet weekend events, the following class events are planned: Friday, Sept 28 – Golf at the Garrison Club and ‘Meet and Greet’ at the Fort Frontenac Officers’ Mess, and Sat, Sep 29 – Class Dinner/Dance at the Harbour Front Restaurant, Portsmouth Harbour. Estimated costs for these events are $40 for 18 holes of golf, $25/person for the ‘Meet and Greet’ and $65/person for the ‘Dinner/Dance’.

Rick Marsden, Ken Lee, Steve Davis and Lawrence McDonough have been ‘busy beavers’. They’ve been planning, making reservations, thinking about a Class gift, and arranging accommodations.

With respect to accommodations, 20 traditional rooms with 2 queen beds have been reserved at the Ambassador Inn (http://ambassador1-px.rtrk.com/home.html) , and 10 rooms at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre (http://business.queensu.ca/dgcc/index.php) under RMC Class of 72 Reunion. Other hotels (e.g., the Holiday Inn, the Raddison Harbourfront, Marriott Residence Inn, and the Sheraton Four Points) in the area offer reunion weekend specials but are typically more expensive than the places we’ve booked. The rates at the Ambassador $130.00/room/night plus tax if guests stay 3 nights starting Thursday, $145.00/room/night plus tax if guests stay 2 nights starting Friday and $155.00/room plus tax if guests stay Saturday only. The rates at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre are $125/night plus tax single occupancy and $155/night plus tax double occupancy. The block bookings expire 27 August. Book early!

Rick Marsden has agreed to manage the finances for the ‘Meet and Greet’ and the Class Dinner/Dance. To this end, he has opened an account at the Bank of Nova Scotia – “RMC Class of 72 Reunion Fund”. Please make out cheques for the Meet and Greet ($25/person) and the Class Dinner ($65/person) to this account and forward them to:

Dr. R Marsden

1249 Humberside Dr.

Kingston, Ontario

K7P 2M9

Please send your cheques to Rick as soon as possible so the Ken Lee and he will have the cash they need to make the required down payments for the venues, food and DJ.

Following up on the good work that Jean-Guy Nadeau did in anticipation of the 2007 Reunion, we are making another ‘special’ effort to track down lost classmates. A complete list of the Class of 72 and the current mailing list is posted on the class website -  If you have any changes, please email them to ross.judd@carossa.com, call me at 1-613-584-4418.

As you can see, the Class website is out of date. I plan to update it over the next couple of months. Also, the Class has a Facebook presence, “RMC – Class of 72 – Info Exchange”. 37 members of our Class are linked to it, and I post Class related information there. Several members of the Class also use LinkedIn. If you’d link to be added to the Facebook group or connected in LinkedIn, please let me know.

To mark the 40th Year after Graduation, it is customary for a class to present a substantial gift to RMC. Contributions are tax deductible! In anticipation of the 40th, please consider making a contribution to the Class fund. Donations can be made on-line through the RMC Foundation website – http://www.rmcclubfoundation.ca, or using the forms posted on the site. If you’re interested in seeing what others have donated, check out the Lifetime Giving Circles linked to the Donor Recognitions Programs page – http://www.rmcclubfoundation.ca/OurDonors/DonorRecognitionPrograms/tabid/91/language/en-US/Default.aspx

If you have any preferences/special requests, please email them to me as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you and catching up with you at the 40th.

TDV,

Ross Judd

First Year Orientation Period & Reunions Updates

FYOP Week One

Cadet Divisional Training Officer (CDTO)

The first week of FYOP was full of surprise and change. With an entire week dedicated to FYOP, FYOP staffs had to combine both previous FYOP experience and creativity to design programs that would prepare first years for upcoming challenges at RMC. However, this planning process was extremely difficult, as not only did FYOP staffs had to adhere to newly enforced restrictions on PT, but they also had to quickly adapt to changes made by the cadet headquarters.

At the same time, the HQ made changes to FYOP based on inputs from Cadet Flight Leaders. This communication between the HQ and FYOP would not have been made possible without Cadet Divisional Training Officers (CDTO), a new position designed to facilitate communication between the Cadet Wing and the CI, as they made sure that their planning groups were made aware of changes enforced from the Chain of Command on time.

In short, while the first years were busy preparing for inspection after getting their beds tossed for poor hospital corners, FYOP staffs and the HQ were busy passing information throughout the Chain of Command.

B Division Report:

CDTO A Report

The first week of FYOP proved demanding for the new first year cadets, the class of 2014. The first week of FYOP involves mostly in-clearance activities. During the week, the new cadets get their textbooks, receive briefings, and learn college knowledge.

The day begins fairly early for the new class, usually starting with physical training or drill at 6 am. The week ended with the Arch Parade, a very important parade in which the new class marches through the arch onto the peninsula. The next time that they march through the arch will be upon graduation in May of 2014.

FYOP continues Monday with new challenges as the first year cadets begin their university studies on Tuesday.

VI Ex-Cadets Big Supporters of Boomers Legacy Ride & Calgary Branch Feast on Lobsters

Boomers Legacy Ride 2010

by AJ Bryan – VI Ex-Cadet Club, 2nd VP 14530 Andrew Bryan

Four years ago, Chief Warrant Officer Todd McGowan decided to ride a bike from Victoria to Comox in order to attend a fundraising dinner in memory of his fellow combat medic, Cpl Andrew Eykelenboom. “Boomer” was killed in 2006 during a suicide bomb attack in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan.

“Boomers Legacy” was started by Maureen Eykelenboom in memory of her son. The charity provides funding for Canadian soldiers to help the people of Afghanistan by addressing needs only soldiers might see, “on the ground, outside the wire”.

Only four years later, this past Friday I joined 94 other cyclists in Comox as we began our 240 kilometres ride to Victoria.

Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club June Luncheon

Posted by rmcclub on 20th June 2010

Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club June Luncheon

On 10 June 2010 the Vancouver Island Branch held its final monthly luncheon for this season. Thanks to our very close relationship with Royal Roads University we were invited to hold the event on the Quarterdeck in the Grant Block at Royal Roads. We had an excellent turnout of members and spouses, over 100 in total. Most noticed that Royal Roads food has improved somewhat since we were cadets!

During the event, our newly elected President 9318 Dave Bindernagel (the last Commandant of RRMC,) expressed all members’ gratitude to RRU for hosting the event and then made a very appropriate and timely presentation to Karen Inkster. Karen, as many of you know, was the producer of the excellent DVD “Coming Full Circle” and has been the focal point for the growth and nourishment of the close ties between ex-cadets and the University. Dave thanked Karen for her continuing and unflagging work on our behalf and announced that by unanimous vote of our members, Karen has been made an honorary member of the Vancouver Island Ex-Cadet Club with the number VIS4. He presented her with a certificate and wished her well in her new adventure – marriage!

Karen is moving to Vancouver and is leaving her post at RRU, but with a little encouragement from our Branch, the University has decided to keep Karen working under contract to continue at least some of the projects she has been doing on our behalf. Another DVD is in the works and Karen hopes to produce more articles for E-Veritas.

As a fitting close to a very enjoyable event the Canadian Forces Snowbirds performed a beautiful flypast directly over the Castle and then swung around over the lagoon before heading for landing at Pat Bay airport. (No, we don’t get a flypast for every function but the ‘Birds were in town for the Canadian Navy Centennial celebrations and were happy to salute the former military college.)

Kingston & Hamilton Branches Enjoying the Early Start to Summer

Posted by rmcclub on 6th June 2010

Kingston Branch News

The Kingston Branch of the RMC Club gathers at the Senior Staff Mess (SSM) for a monthly luncheon – the first Wednesday of each month – 12 months a year.

The energetic committee led by President, Reg Watts is well organized. In addition to informative guest speakers every month, the Branch provides valuable support to the college in a number of various important projects. See http://www.rmcclubkingston.com/events.htm

Last Wednesday (2 June) was another enjoyable day. A turnout of about 35 Branch members, including the commandant – who has been a regular monthly attendee – enjoyed a pre-dinner beverage; a great meal; and an informative address given by CHIEF OF STAFF – CANADIAN DEFENCE ACADEMY – CAPTAIN (N) J.E. JOLLYMORE.

An indication of the interest in the Canadian Defence Academy talk given by the well spoken 35 year navy veteran; a BSc graduate from Dalhousie University who also earned a BEng from the Nova Scotia Technical College was that it ran a good half hour over the allotted time mostly because of the questions coming from the highly interested audience.

Our e-Veritas camera crew visited early and had to leave early before everyone showed up. See photos below.

Ex cadets from the Kingston area – and those visiting are welcome to attend these highly enjoyable monthly luncheons.

Upcoming Events:

7 Jul luncheon (Lt Col Scott Clancy, CO of 1 Wing (helicopters) on the relief work in Haiti this year ) -

July 21 – there is a Summer Dinner Cruise – Click here for details – http://www.rmcclubkingston.com/events.htm

As mentioned, the Reg Watts led committee is doing a great job. Ex cadets in the Kingston area – all ages should mark their Day Timers for the first Wed of every month and in July – the 21st!

Hamilton Branch – Do it in Style

Last Thursday (3 June) the Art Gallery of Hamilton was the scene of a classy dinner that was put on by the Hamilton Branch of the RMC Club. The theme was a “Family Celebration” and there ware several multi-generation RMC families in attendance. This annual event was hosted by Hamilton Branch President, 5337 Bob and Maggie Carr.

The entire evening was truly reflective of – ‘Connecting members of the RMC Family’.

16412 Gordon Clarke, President, RMC Club of Canada took the opportunity to present an Honorary life membership to a surprised but grateful 2552 William Young who was accompanied at the dinner by his wife Joyce.

RMC commandant, Commodore WS (Bill) Truelove was the Guest Speaker – he took the opportunity to update the entire group on the terrific year just experienced at RMC and encouraged them all to visit the College soon.

The first year RMC commandant also met and spoke with Amanda Dingman, Chris Kunkel, and Ian Wilson three young people recently accepted into the military colleges who will begin training this summer. “I encouraged them each to start doing more push ups, practice their French and study harder!!”

In total there were 46 at the dinner, including S150 Peter Dawe, Executive Director who made the trek from Kingston and 12738 D’Arcy Wilson father of Ian one of the new recruits. “Brenda and I enjoyed a fabulous evening”, added the Guest Speaker.

The fit-looking and enthusiast Royal Roads Military College 1985 graduate concluded his talk. “We look forward to visiting Hamilton and the other Branches of the RMC Club again over the next year. I find each of these visits extremely useful and always enjoy updating the Ex Cadets on their College.”

Royal Roads Reunion Planning Update
Wayne Hammond
9 June 2009

This is an update on what has taken place over the last few weeks regarding our class’s participation in the RRU Reunion this fall 10 – 13 September. I am trying to plan as much as possible now to avoid the last minute headaches that usually occur just prior to the event.

Bob Craig and I met with Karen Inkster at RRU and reviewed my list of suggested modifications to what took place last year. She gave us good council on all of them and took them to the RRU planning group last week to see whether and how the changes could be implemented. We are now working on the details which will be finalized at the planning meeting next week. Following that, the registration form will be put on the RRU web site and registration will begin. Here is what we decided.

1. The class graduating in ’59 (our class) is holding a reception at the Harbour Hotel on Thurs 10 Sept from 5 – 9 pm. I realize this is over the supper hour. Are the hours OK or should we cut it off at 8 pm so that people can go out for supper afterwards? We will invite the classes graduating in ’58 and 60 – our Juniors and Seniors since we will remember most of them – look in your Log books. We are also inviting through the Victoria and Vancouver branches, any RMC and CMR personnel from those years who are in the vicinity to gain a feel for the Royal Roads experience.

2. The Navy will be hosting again this year, all who are attending the Reunion to a day’s sail on a frigate out on the Strait on Friday, 11 Sept. This was a fantastic event and the food was wonderful.

3. There is a reception that evening for everyone. It was held at the castle last year but was fairly crowded. I don’t know if they have decided where to hold it this year.

4. On Saturday we are having a box lunch for all ex cadets including those from when Royal Roads was a Naval College. This will be held at the Mess Decks from 11 am to 1:30 pm. This will allow time for people to get back to the Quarterdeck for the Robert Bateman presentation – or they can continue socializing at the Mess Decks.

5. The formal dinner that evening was most enjoyable. Blazer and Flannels are also an appropriate dress. Before the dinner RRU will present a continuous showing of a DVD with all the scanned pictures that hopefully you are digging out and sending to Karen.

6. We will meet at the flag pole now located at what was the Commandant’s house, for tours of the grounds and castle at 10 am Sunday. At 11 am we will form up in front in front of the castle for our Ceremonial Circle. Kent Foster has graciously volunteered to try and get us from a gaggle into possibly 3 ranks and to show us which one is our left foot. He assures me there will be NO circles given unless Tex Thomas has froust on the top of his beret. Old Brigade berets, blazers and flannels would be appropriate.

Remember to get the dates 10 – 13 Sept on your calendar and be ready to register as soon as the information is available on the RRU site.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to me at Vdansk@aol.com or call me at 425 577-1093
