Posted by rmcclub on 20th May 2013

The Teaching Excellence Award

15595 Dr. William (Billy) Allan (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering)

The Teaching Excellence Award – The Teaching Excellence Award was donated by the Class of 1965 in memory of the late Dr. Tom Barton. It is given in recognition of exemplary concern for students, dedication to teaching and enthusiasm in lecturing and an extraordinary ability to stimulate learning.

The Cowan Prize for Excellence in Research

Dr. Keith Neilson, (History Department)

The Cowan Prize for Excellence in Research – The Cowan Prize for Excellence in Research was instituted in 2000 thanks to an endowment created by our former Principal Dr. John Scott Cowan. It is intended to recognize a member of faculty who has earned distinction through their scholarship. The deed of gift requires that the selection committee consider primarily the quality, originality, impact and quantity of the scholarly productivity of the researcher. Added weight may be given to work appearing in the past three years, and to the extent to which the work resonates with the special mission of the College, broadly defined.

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Prize Winners

Posted by rmcclub on 20th May 2013

By: 23191 Capt Sean Leithead

Every spring, the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department staff and students come together to recognize the efforts and achievements of the top 3rd and 4th year students. The awards are named after pioneers in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering who were also significant contributors and mentors at RMC.

(L to R) Dr. Moffatt and 25831 NCdt Hicks (Off House-hunting - M0984 NCdt Hynes)

The A.C. Leonard Award is given annually to the student group in 4th year judged by the faculty to have presented the best 4th year Mechanical Engineering Project. It honours Dr. A.C. Leonard, former Dean of Engineering, department head and professor of Mechanical Engineering at RMC. He also served in the RCAF in World War II (WWII), in the Canadian Army as an RCEME officer in Korea. Outstanding teacher, scholar and mentor, Dr. Leonard displayed a mastery of the orderly and logical communication of engineering knowledge, which the award is intended to recognize. This year’s award was presented by 3342 Dr. Craig Moffatt to the team of 25831 NCdt (IV) Lloyd Hicks and M0984 NCdt (IV) William Hynes for their work on the Preliminary Design of a Deep Water Arctic Submarine.

(L to R) 2864 Dr. Bussières and 25645 OCdt Lessard

The Bussières Prize is awarded annually to the 3rd year student achieving the highest average in design-related engineering courses, and having demonstrated singular excellence in the 3rd year Mechanical Engineering Design Course competition.  2864 Dr. Bussières, was a member of the class known as the “The New One Hundred”, which re-opened RMC after WWII. He served fourteen years in the RCAF, mostly as a Flight Test Engineer, and retired as a Squadron Leader. Later he became a member of the RMC faculty, also serving ten years as Special Assistant to the Principal and three years as the Mechanical Engineering department head. He always tried to embed his experience with all stages of aircraft design into his teaching and mentoring of RMC cadets. Dr. Bussières presented this year’s prize to 25645 OCdt (III) Guillaume Lessard.

(L to R) Dr. Moffatt and 25734 OCdt Vautour

The W.C. Moffatt Award is given annually to the 4th year Aeronautical Engineering student who best demonstrates the qualities of a person driven to excellence by their own enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and strong motivation to learn.  3342 Dr. Moffatt is an outstanding teacher, and former Department Head and later Dean of Engineering, who inspired his students to excellence for over 40 years at RMC. The winning student must also have contributed to a positive learning experience for his or her entire class through sound leadership in the classroom and laboratories. Dr. Moffatt presented this year’s award, which is selected by a secret ballot of all 4th year Aeronautical Engineering students to their most-deserving peer, to 25734 OCdt (IV) Justin Vautour.

(L to R) 9805 BGen (ret'd) Lucas and 26208 OCdt Boots

The Lucas Prize is presented annually to the 3rd year Aeronautical Engineering student who demonstrated singular excellence in the 3rd yr Aeronautical Design Course competition. 9805 Brigadier General (retired) Dwayne Lucas prompted the implementation of an Aeronautical Engineering Degree program at RMC when he was the Director General Aerospace Equipment Program Management in 2003. He is an Aircraft Structural Engineer who never misses the opportunity to enhance the development of young officers and engineers while also being dedicated to support Air Force operations. BGen (retired) Lucas presented this year’s prize to 26208 OCdt (III) David Boots.

Following the award presentations in Currie Hall, the 4th year Mech and Aero classes and the faculty gathered for the iconic class photo that would soon join the collection that lines the halls of the Mech/Aero Department for future generations to see. Afterwards, the staff and award winners had a chance to mingle and reflect upon the year at a reception at the RMC Senior Staff Mess. Congratulations to the award winners, and to the 4th years. May your knowledge and critical thinking skills developed during your Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering programs aid you in the careers on which you are about to embark.

Good bye, good luck, Pte. Mike Shewfelt

Posted by rmcclub on 7th April 2013

Key e-Veritas Staffer Moving On…

Regular readers of e-Veritas over the past 15 months will easily recognize the name Mike Shewfelt.

Mike has been composing articles and has been our main photographer since Jan 2012.

This Issue 14 for 2013 is the last scheduled appearance of his contributions as Mike is moving on to the next phase of his military career in the Canadian Armed Forces. On Saturday next he heads off to Ste Jean, QC for basic training.

Mike has been around RMCC for almost five years. During his time as an officer cadet he excelled at academics and earned a Degree; he also did well in second language training and leadership situations.

Over the years we have been fortunate to have had the services of a number of highly motivated cadets help us for various lengths of time in putting out e-Veritas . Mike ranks at the top of the list for reliability, positive attitude, can do spirit, and writing ability. And all-round nice guy!

Since he joined our team – we published 49 editions last year; this is number 14 so far for 2013. Do the math – 63 editions in 66 weeks! His fingerprints are all over every one of these Issues. He attended most function going on around RMCC (regardless of the day /time) – taking photos and writing a short script which gave meaning to the photos. When various events were going on simultaneously he would often move from one event to the other. For every hour spent at the particular event, he would spend another two (on average) on layout. It was not unusual for his work to be published the same day or very soon after the event.

Thanks, ‘Mike’ and good luck in the next phase of your military career. You will be tough to replace.

Thank you | Merci…& Year End Stats

Posted by rmcclub on 16th December 2012

Caption: The “Major” Danny and Sheila McLeod two big supporters of e-Veritas with Rolande and Bill Oliver.

Thank You readers – volunteers – sponsors – partners…

Over the past seven years or so during this season, we have taken time out to show our appreciation to a large host of people. This is our 334th edition since our modest start back in January, 2005. We are still very much enjoying the experience; our aim has always been to work hard in making sure that the “next” edition will be the best one yet!

Without further ado, we would like to thank: Club Executive & Club staffersMary Darlington & Linda Mathieu have been consistent supporters day in and day out. The rapport from the recently departed Club Executive Director, Mike Rostek, was much appreciated too.

Victoria Edwards continues to impress us and a whole host of readers with her timely and professional articles week after week. She is definitely a star performer and her recent articles on past Presidents of the Club speak for themselves.

Proof reading support from Al Pickering with the Bill McColl 1950s diary, in particular, helps us keep that professional edge.

Capitaine Éric Le Marec, Officier des Affaires Publiques du CMR Saint-Jean, nous a tenus très bien informés des événements du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean au courant de la dernière année.

Our Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Awards go to Mike Shewfelt. He has become our go-to-guy for articles and photos from the peninsula. Also, the Class Notes section has been his focus for the past number of months and he never fails to come up with gems every Issue. He has done it all with grit and grace at all hours of the day and night. Some weeks all seven days!

Paul Lystiuk has been a valuable behind the scenes helper with layout, editing and a host of other mundane but necessary tasks that ensures we sustain a first-class look.

A very pleasant surprise is the emergence of four, I Year cadets who have stepped up and provided well written and informative articles: Claire Matlock who has provided technical assistance too; Kyra Smith; Danielle Andela; and Christopher Wright have all helped make e-Veritas what it is in 2012. We are hoping that they and other like-minded cadets continue to feed us such high quality articles for a long time.

We continue to expand our business approach. After all, bills have to be paid! Below we have listed just about everyone who stepped up, opened their pocketbooks and helped us out. We look to at least triple that number for 2013. Beat us to the punch and be a 101 sponsor in 2013!

We will be contacting many of you for support during the coming year.

This Issue #49 is our last for 2012.

For those who like us who celebrate the birth of Christ – Merry Christmas. To the rest – Happy Holidays!

Look for e-Veritas 1 / 2013 in early January.

Bill & Rolande Oliver

“University with a Difference”: Behind-the-Scenes

Posted by rmcclub on 20th May 2012

Cadet Initiative Points Camera at College

By WJO

Many of our readers have been following the “University with a Difference” video series headlined in eVeritas these past two months, and the RMC Club has received much positive feedback on the campaign’s unique style and compelling promotion of RMCC activities. Thanks are owed to the series cadet-creators, director 25881 OCdt Anthony Matlock (left) and producer 25783 OCdt Jordon Hennessey (right).

Each week these two enterprising cadets, among their other contributions to eVeritas and honours-level studies, commit themselves to producing high-quality short-films which, in their own words, “aim to share glimpses of College life with the RMCC community, while helping spur continuous personal growth and teamwork among cadets who have been granted unique officer-training and educational opportunities.”

This series has brought College activities to life through topics ranging from RMCC’s unique physical education program to high-profile events such as the Graduation ceremony. Doing this, however, is no easy task, requiring an average of twenty hours for each short film! The process begins well in advance of any video recording, when director, Anthony, drafts a script for coverage of upcoming activities. It is then the job of  producer, Jordon, to scout locations and secure special permissions, props and participants.  Once the week of video recording arrives it is all hands-on deck for some careful filming.

Technically speaking, the raw recording is accomplished with Sony HDV cameras and two “GoPro” miniature videocameras, which allow for unique point-of-view angles and provide the video series with its signature fish-eye lens effect.  Anthony then transfers the footage to the editing program, Adobe Premier Pro, to build the video, synch the music, generate transitions and add titles.  The final video product is released on eVeritas via Youtube. The promotional quality of the series speaks for itself, and certainly adds value to eVeritas’ mission of constantly delivering relevant and cutting-edge coverage of the College for the RMCC community.

It is through the efforts of  dedicated volunteers like OCdts Matlock and Hennessey that e-Veritas can keep turning out informative and high quality editions 50 times per year. For the most part, the equipment used is personally owned or “borrowed” – all at zero costs to the RMC Club operating budget.

The efforts of these two individuals is way beyond “the call of duty” – and for that, Rolande and I thank and salute them!
