RMC Nijmegen Team Training

By: Captain Paule Poulin

The RMC Nijmegen Team led by Captain Dany Poulin are hard at work marching around the city to get ready for the actual event. They leave on July 11, 2008 will conduct the official marches from July 15-18, flying the RMC flag, and will be back at RMC on July 21.

Nijmegen March Turns Cadets On!

By: 24164 Élof François-Olivier Gauthier (RMC ’09)

The Nijmegen International Four-Days March is held annually in the Netherlands. This major event draws approximately 45,000 marchers from 50 different countries and is witnessed by over one million spectators. The Canadians Forces have participated in this event since 1952.

Maybe those 40 kilometres a day do not look so hard when you first look at it. But after having accomplished more than 500 kilometres in less than 5 weeks, I can tell you that I never expected it to be so hard mentally, morally and physically. In order to be a member of the team, we had to accumulate 500 kilometres and we had to do two consecutive 40 kilometres marches by the 20th of June.

We will be leaving for the Netherlands on the 11th of July. Until then, we will still be training. If you see us walking in the streets of Kingston, honk at us because it is a great motivation for the whole team.

Last but not least, we would also like to thank the RMC Club Foundation that generously provided $2500 to the team.

Neighbourhood pilots are ‘just passing by’
Royal Military College skies have long been the site of impromptu aerial displays
BY IAN ELLIOT WHIG-STANDARD MILITARY REPORTER

The Snowbirds put on a show above Kingston this week, but their air show was merely the most visible and best-publicized flyby of the city.
All year round, the skies above Royal Military College are the scene of impromptu aerial displays by Canadian Forces aircraft. The catch is that they are forbidden by military flight regulations from putting on what is technically known as an air show, so they opt for a Just Passing By. Read the rest of this entry »

National Aboriginal Day was celebrated on 21 June 2008. First proclaimed by the Governor General in 1996, National Aboriginal Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and recognize the first peoples of Canada: the First Nations, Inuit and Métis. June 21st was chosen as National Aboriginal Day because of its cultural significance as the summer solstice (longest day of the year and the first day of summer) and because, for generations, the Aboriginal peoples have traditionally celebrated their unique heritage at this time of year. National Aboriginal Day is part of the broader recognition of the contributions and achievements of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. National Aboriginal Day is now part of the , which also include Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24th), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27th) and Canada Day (July 1st). As Defence Champion for Aboriginal Peoples I strongly encourage DND employees and CF members to recognize and celebrate the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada through the many activities and events that will be taking place across the country.

canade-en-fete2.gif

8 Trivia Questions – By E 3103 Victoria Edwards (RMC ’03)

Answers can be found at the end of We Get e-mails
QUESTION #1

Who am I?

william_harry_pope.JPG

  • My mother was a countess from a Belgian family that traced its
lineage back to Napoleon’s general Jean-Baptiste Dumonceau. My
paternal grandmother was descended from some of the very first Quebec settlers.
  • My father, a lieutenant general in the Canadian army, was the son of
one-time private secretary to J.A. Macdonald and a lifelong public
servant who was credited with setting up the Department of External
Affairs and choosing Canada’s heraldic motto “a mari usque ad mare”
    (from sea to sea).
  • My great-grandfather, after whom I was named, was one of the Fathers of Confederation.
  • I entered the class of 40 at Royal Military College. After
graduating, I joined the Voltigeurs of Quebec and then the Royal 22e -
    a French Canadian regiment.
  • As a Lieutenant on May 19th 1944 on the Italian front, I objected
when a German officer took me prisoner: “I come from a military
family and cannot accept the dishonour of being made a prisoner, So
long as I have reason to believe we will all be repatriated, I will
not try to escape; but as soon as I come to realize that we won’t be,
then it will be my duty to escape.” Eleven days later, I escaped on
my way to a Prisoner of War camp. I fought behind enemy lines for the
next two months before rejoining his own Canadian regiment. I was
twice mentioned in despatches in World War II,
  • I was awarded the Military Cross during the Korean War and promoted
    to major.
  • In peacetime, I pursued university studies part-time and held a series of staff and regimental posts until the late 1950s. In 1959, I publicized my opposition to NATO defensive strategy of limited nuclear war in an article for the Canadian Army Journal, and, a few months later, I submitted my resignation from the military.
  • After resigning from the army, I took on political work with the socialist CCF. I worked an assistant to the federal leaders of the CCF and the NDP, Hazen Argue and Tommy Douglas, and served as president of the Social Democratic Party (CCF) in Quebec. As a graduate student, at the University of Ottawa and then the University of Toronto, I ran several times as an NDP candidate but later lost faith in the conventional parliamentary parties.
  • From 1967-1987, I taught in Ryerson’s Department of Economics and published widely. My first book was The Elephant and the Mouse (McClelland & Stewart, 1971).
  • I was a founding member of the Committee on Monetary and Economic Reform (COMER), and was a candidate and shadow finance committee chairman in the short-lived National Party during the early 1990s.
  • After my retirement in 1987, I continued to write. Although my last textbook, All You Must Know About Economics, appeared in 1996, I later wrote my war memoirs.
  • Ryerson established an award and a scholarship for academic
    excellence in my honour.

a) 2796 William Harold (Henry) Pope (RMC 1940)
b) 2795 John H Poag (RMC 1940)

colours.jpgThe consecration of new Colours (flags) for the Royal Military College of Canada was held on Saturday 29th September 2001. The current Colours were presented by the Hon. Peter Millikin, Speaker of the House of Commons, [Shown in the photo] on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen. The original regulation in the Canadian Forces stated that the consecration of Colours had to be carried out by a revered religious figure. Since the Royal Military College of Canada reflects Canadian society by its mosaic of different ethnic groups, cultures and faith traditions we believed it was necessary for this celebration to have a multi faith spirit. As such, the consecration ceremony included the main religions representedat the College: First Nations of Canada; Buddhist; Christian; Hindu; Jewish; Muslim; Sikh; and Zorastrian. The old Colours were laid up for display at Kingston City Hall in 2001, and are on display there now.

Goodbyes are never easy. They’re particularly hard when you have to bid your adieus to people you like and respect. Ms Kimberly St-Louis has been part of the Panet House Team for a little over a year. During this relatively short time, Kimberly has certainly made her mark and she will be sorely missed. Pictured, she is seen standing taking with participants during the 10th Annual Legacy Dinner. She was the key organizer for this popular and successful event. All of us at Panet House wish her well.

Many Thanks

It has been my pleasure to be a part of the RMC Foundation Team over the past year. I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many interesting and wonderful people, and many Ex-Cadets have become near and dear to my heart (you know who you are!).

After being a military wife, full time working mother of three children andan active community member for many years, I have decided to take a breather from the “rat race” and focus on my family and reassess my professional goals. Hence effective the end of this month (June 2008), I will no longer be at the RMC Foundation.

I am very thankful to have had such wonderful and positive role models that have touched my life.

Thank you all.

Several Ex Cadets were participating as part of the Canadian Age Group Team at the World Triathlon Championships in Vancouver 5-8 Jun 08. None of our results were as impressive as Capt Fawcett’s inspiring performance, but we were there “tri-ing” for Canada.

The attached photo is of 11061 Don Debienne (RRMC RMC ’76), 11075 Bob Gebbie (RRMC RMC ’76), and 6633 Jack Harris (RRMC RMC ’65).

12186 Tom Keogh (RMC ’79) was also competing and 4670 Mike Ellis (CMR RMC ’60) was there in an official capacity.

If any other ex cadets competed, I would like to hear from them.

Next year the World Championships are in Gold Coast Australia – a warmer venue than Vancouver where temperatures were at 50 year lows.

Bob Gebbie is doing two Ironman races this year. One of these 141 mile races in a year is a major accomplishment, doing two in one year is heroic. He is doing it to raise money for ALS and to celebrate the extrordinary accomplishment of Jon “Blazeman” Blais who completed the Hawaiian Ironman while suffering thru ALS. You can see more about Bob’s fund raising at more…

We would like to say a special thanks to a few people who contributed their time, energy, and expertises to make e-Veritas what it is today. The contributions of our “volunteers” greatly extend the range and impact of the services offered by us.

We would particularly like to acknowledge the professional articles submitted by RMC Public Affairs Officer, Captain Paule Poulin who will be departing the college next week. Over the past year, Paule has “flooded” us with highly polished articles centered around – What’s happening around RMC. We deeply appreciate her efforts and wish her well and continued success in her next posting to Ottawa.

E 3161 Victoria Edwards (RMC ’03) has not slowed down. A quick peek of this edition is typical of her contributions. The magnificent Trivia section and most of the Where are they now articles are a result of her efforts. Our product would be much less without her interest and help.

Officer Cadet Kevin Kunz has been our main technical person for the last 15 editions or so. He not only spends extra time in doing the layout; he patiently and tactfully coaches us to upgrade and improve our own computer skills. We are indeed much appreciative of his attitude and efforts.

Last but not least, we are very grateful to all the sponsors, and “members” that provided financial support to make e-Veritas possible. To each and every one of you – thank you!

For those of you who are not current members in good standing – please consider taking out a Club membership. Info
