Dr. B Asks, “What are you reading?”

“I read so much stuff!”

27534 OCdt (IV) Lillian Hovey had a difficult time answering my weekly question, “What are you reading?” The problem? She laughed: “I read so much stuff!”

Her favourite text of late is actually a trilogy: Sam Farren’s Dragonoak. It’s an epic fantasy that, while not overly long, is broad in its social explorations: “It deals with trauma recovery, addiction, and the complications of flawed characters. It’s very relatable.”

OCdt Hovey writes nearly as much as she reads in the fantasy genre; what attracted her to the Dragonoak trilogy? “Farren imagines a world where binaries don’t exist. Nobody worries about categorization, and a strict definition of ‘normal’ gets thrown out the window. Being a person isn’t defined by the norm; just being is the norm. It’s refreshing, something to strive for.”
