“Why revisit a book you’ve already read?”
Article Dr. Erika Behrisch Elce
WO Chuck Ansell let me know what book he was enjoying this week: he’s rereading Rudolph Giuliani’s Leadership.
Why is WO Ansell revisiting a book he’s already read? “With Giuliani back in the news, I was reminded of his work as mayor of New York City, especially in the aftermath of 9/11. He made decisions on the fly, in the middle of an emergency, and it’s a leadership style I admire.”
For WO Ansell, Giuliani’s presence of mind during the tragedy made him a hero: “It’s always easy to lead when there’s nothing going on; you get all sorts of trial runs. When 9/11 happened, there were no second chances. Giuliani may not have made all the best decisions, but he made decisions and he acted on them. That in itself was good leadership. You don’t have to do the best job; sometimes you have to just do it.”
What’s WO Ansell’s go-to read? “I’m a huge history nerd. I had to put down a 3-volume 1,000,000-page history of the American Civil War, but I’ll probably pick it up again.”
