Sports: Varsity scoreboard and cadets impressive at Judo Ontario Open

“It wasn’t an exquisite win tonight, but I thought we carried the play most of the game. A lot of these guys played well, but they played well as well,” head coach Patrick Grandmaître – Ottawa Gee Gees said following the game. “You can’t expect an easy game against them cause they work hard, they’re structured, and they’ve got good goaltending…”

On 12-NOV-17, 5 members of the RMC Judo team qualified to attend the Judo Ontario Open 2017 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

The Judo Ontario Open is a tournament that takes place once a year, and it is an open invitation to all Judo athletes across Canada. 28101 OCdt Y.N. Jo won the Gold medal in the -90kg Senior novice division by throwing all of his opponents by Ippon, spending no more than a minute each match.

27651 OCdt J. Seong won Gold in the -81kg Senior Novice division mostly by Ippon and a Waza-ri in the Golden Score (after 4 minutes). 28138 OCdt J. Weir won a Bronze medal in the -90kg Senior novice division after a grueling match with a long-time veteran in the sport of Judo. 27805 OCdt A. Lopez-Espinosa and 27492 OCdt C. Mycroft had hard-fought matches, including a spectacular Ippon by C. Mycroft and a very close referee judgement that resulted in a loss for A. Lopez-Espinosa.

At the end of the day, the Judo Ontario Open was a learning experience for the RMC Judo team.

The Judo team represented the College very well and made acquaintances with numerous neighboring clubs and a few others all over the provinces. The competition season is just getting started and there are many more tournaments to come for the RMC Judo team.

The RMC judo team thanks the RMC foundation for funding the trip and making this opportunity possible.
