“What I want is a great story!”
Article by Dr. Erika Behrisch Elce
This week I caught up with R.H. Thompson, award-winning actor and director, and co-producer of The World Remembers, an international WWI memorial project that will culminate in 2018’s Remembrance Day on 11 November. We chatted during the opening ceremony of RMC’s portion of the project in Baronial Hall; he has just picked up Michael Ondaatje’s new book, Warlight.
Mr. Thompson’s only on page 8, but knows he will love Ondaatje’s new book: “he’s one of our greatest writers.” What about Ondaatje is worth coming back to? “I marvel at the simplicity of his sentences. His writing seems so straightforward in its presentation, but the tales he tells are so powerful: you move easily along and then all of a sudden, out of a simple tale, this great whale of a story rises to the surface.”
Does he have a favourite writer or genre? “Nope! Give me a movie, a song, a book, whatever—what I want is a great story.”
