- The RMC Club Vancouver Branch and the Calgary Branch co-hosted the RMC Paladins Rugby Team at HMCS Discovery on Thursday, March 10th. The Branch also invited local ROTP candidates and their parents to mingle with the team. Scott Treadwell and Chris Haines set up catering and the venue. One of the highlights of the evening was when Coach McDonagh and the team presented 13766 Konrad Mech with a team jersey signed by the First XV in appreciation for financial support to the Paladins. The evening raised over $600 for the team.
- Col Chris Hadfield – “Rocketman” – played in concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Friday, April 1st and Saturday April 2nd.
The story of the jersey – in his own words 13766 Konrad Mech– : “When I attended Royal Roads and RMC, I was fortunate to travel to the UK on two rugby tours. Then in 2009, our son Anders Mech decided to join RMC. But the way he attended was rather round-about. He was recruited by Coach McDonagh to play rugby – but the deal was he had to join the Prince of Wales Own Regiment as a rifleman, he had to receive a letter from the CO granting permission to attend class, and he had to live off campus while attending class in civilian clothes (every first-year’s dream). After 1st year Anders applied to become a Red Coat in the RETP program, and decided to stay with his FYOP cohort. He graduated in 2014 as an Acting Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy and is now parading with HMCS Carleton in Ottawa. To pay it forward for the great times I had, and in recognition of the Rugby Team having made all this possible, I made a directed donation to the team. And to all other ex-cadets who had an excellent College experience thanks to the Foundation: time to pay it forward!”
Col Chris Hadfield – “Rocketman” – played in concert with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Friday, April 1st and Saturday April 2nd. The Vancouver Branch mustered over 24 attendees on both nights to see Chris sing, play, and recite poetry. The concert featured a song co-written by Chris and his son Evan, another written by his brother Dave, and the song “Is Somebody Singing?” co-written with Ed Robertson of The Bare Naked Ladies. Both shows were sold out and the performances were extremely well-received. Chris invited Class of 82 classmates Peter Jarvis and Konrad Mech backstage before the Friday show, to recreate some Royal Roads humour.
